MediaBridge introduction

PLDS Automotive develops new MediaBridge for future-proof, flexible in-car integration of mobile devices.

MP3 players, mobile telephones, USB memory sticks - increasing numbers of mobile devices intended for the home entertainment market now require integration with vehicle systems. The main challenges are to develop standardised interfaces and integration solutions. To meet these challenges, PLDS Automotive, the specialist in disk drive technologies, has developed its new "MediaBridge". The MediaBridge, a universal device adaptor that supports automatic connection, simply acts as an interface into the car's own systems. Connecting a mobile device to the car's multimedia control unit is easy and secure, and can be done manually in just a couple of seconds.

With MediaBridge, PLDS Automotive is responding to a trend in the market. Increasing numbers of drivers want to integrate their mobile devices such as MP3 players or telephones into their vehicles, but without complex installation requirements. PLDS Automotive, the specialist in automotive DVD and CD drives, has developed its new "MediaBridge" to meet this requirement. The solution comprises a small shell, or compartment, into which the driver simply inserts the relevant device. The universal device adaptor closes automatically, pushing the mobile device automatically into the correct socket and creating a direct connection to the MediaBridge electronics. The actual interface with the car remains hidden from the driver. A major point of this system is that the MediaBridge can also be upgraded at any time, since it supports a system of multi-level updates. If the driver purchases a new mobile device, then it is just a case of putting it into the compartment, and the latest technology is once again ready to use.

In developing the MediaBridge, PLDS Automotive has paid particular attention to safety. Drivers can operate the interface with just one hand, ensuring that they keep at least one hand on the steering wheel at all times. The security of the car's own systems is also guaranteed, since the software that is responsible for managing vehicle functions remains hidden from the driver and is thus well protected against unauthorised access.

The MediaBridge is a flexible approach to the problem, and can be installed in various locations within the vehicle, thus allowing it to be integrated into the design of the car. Whether as part of a dashboard-mounted multimedia unit, hidden away in the glove box or tucked under the seat, the device is easy to conceal, but also easy for the driver to use. If required the device can also be illuminated for use in the dark.

The MediaBridge from PLDS Automotive allows vehicle manufacturers to react to the latest innovations in communications and information systems within a very short period of time. Whether video, audio or telephony, all of these functions can now be easily integrated into the car's systems. Development of this patented design has already progressed to a prototype, and is available for use in development of integrated solutions.
